Exploits of a Vegan Wannabe

We went to our local farmers market Saturday with our friend Amy. It was alive with energy, families and veggie possibilities. I love going there. Every time we go, I wonder to myself…why don’t we do this every weekend?  The produce is beautiful, inexpensive and a lot of it is locally grown. It is the easiest way I know to be green, save money and have a great time doing so.

The truth is, I forget all of these things and get lazy. It is a habit to get in my car and go to our closest grocery store. I bring my big cool reusable bag and typically, forget in the trunk because I am in a hurry to do my habitual things…to get it done.

Not this Saturday though…we did it, we got there. We took our BFF, our reusable bags and a wad of cash to purchase the most luscious produce around.

We bought organic bread, tri-color peppers and corn on the cob so buttery it could scare  a vegan. We bought soy flour, arrowroot and almond meal at rock bottom prices. The flowers were abundant and despite the chilly temps and wind, people strolled around like it was a Michigan Summer.

It was  such a beautiful day and a great reminder that it really is worth the trip. The feeling you get from handing a farmer a dollar bill will always trump paying the cashier at your mega-mart. The produce is better, it is cheaper and the experience borders on magical. Being surrounded by the efforts of the sun, wind and rain is so fantastic. This sounds a bit lofty but it was a really fun day!!
