7/23 Liquid Aminos-Undercover Protein

I have seen liquid amino acids in the store and have seen them on countless ingredient lists for vegan recipes. I have continued to wonder, what are they and do I want to ingest them? I began to surmise that it was the same type of deal as the Nutritional Yeast…most vegan pantries stock it and you either like it or you don’t.

It wasn’t until the vegan retreat that I really got on board with the liquid aminos. We put a splash in our gravies, a dash in our portobello marinade and a smidge in our chick pea chick’n salad. We basically used a little bit in everything that needed a burst of the savory.

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. We all need them, we all have them. The liquid amino acids are essentially a kicked up, protein packed, low sodium version of soy sauce. It is both salty and savory.

The brand most commonly recognized is made by Bragg. Their liquid aminos are made with non-GMO soybeans that provide 16 essential and non essential amino acids.liquid aminos group photo

It is basically a good for you liquid seasoning that makes everything taste better. At the Bragg site  http://bragg.com/samples/samples_5121.php

you can sign up for free samples. It would be reckless and morally wrong to not do this for yourself. I love getting good mail.

I found this shirt and the saying cracks me up every time. No, I don’t eat Meat. Yes I get enough protein. No, my shoes aren’t leather. Yes, I have a life.

Vegetarians and vegans in the crowd, don’t people always ask you that about protein??!! Are you really vegan/vegatarian?? How do you get enough protein? Really, are you kidding me??! Protein comes in many forms other than burgers and steaks. I always want to say something strange like,” Vegetarians are a super species that do not require protein to live.”  Now I can tell them that even my vegan condiments have protein.

If you have already experienced the love of liquid aminos and would like to share some of your tips, we would all love to hear them.

Have a delicious day.

#1 question, hands down. “Where do you get your protein.” Betsy usually answers with, “We actually probably get MORE protein than meat-eaters because of all the vegetables that we consume.”

J., last night we read an article in the 10th anniv issue of VegNews and they shared a funny reply to this protein question. When the author is asked “Where do you get your protein?”, she replies, from eating the people who ask me that question! I’m going to try that next time.
