I love hot dogs. I eat them all summer long from the grill, in a bun, without a bun, in baked beans… I love them. Last week I had my first Chicago Style dog ever and it blew my mind. It is a hot dog smothered in yellow mustard, sweet relish (the crazy bright green kind), tomatoes, hot peppers, white onions, a dill pickle spear and served cradled in a fresh baked poppy seed roll and crowned with celery salt. What??
Here is the thing though…I also love chili dogs. The non- descript texture and flavor of coney chili is divine. Over the Summer our friend Amy told us about a phenomenon called the Chili Dog Pizza. It was a pizza made with coney chili, hot dogs and cheddar cheese. She said it was absolutely amazing.
Sandy replicated that with tofu dogs and soy cheese and it was more fun to eat than watching a parade or a trip to the waterpark in July.
So….last night I married the three and created a superfood…The Chicago Style Chili Dog Pizza.
Chicago Style Chili Dog Pizza
By: S. Duquet
1 lb. bag of whole wheat pizza dough (Most grocery stores sell fresh pizza dough. If you can not find one then purchase one from your favorite neighborhood pizza joint or purchase a pre-made crust you love)
1 14.7 oz can of vegetarian chili (you will not need the entire can)
1/2 C Vegan cheddar cheese (I used Daiya)
4 Vegan hot dogs (I used Litelife Smart Dogs)
1 Tbsp melted vegan butter
1-2 Tbsp Poppy Seeds
Various condiments of choice for topping your slice (I topped mine with yellow mustard, sweet relish and chopped tomatoes)
Make It Happen
~Cut hot dogs into 1/2 inch slices and sautee in a pan with a smidge of cooking spray then set dogs aside
~Roll out your pizza dough and place on pizza stone or baking sheet. Poke tons of tiny holes all over the dough circle with a fork (this is called docking the dough). This will prevent large air bubbles from forming in the dough so the pie can cook evenly.
~Blend the chili until smooth using a blender or boat motor
~Top your pizza with the chili the same you would dress a pizza with pizza sauce
~Spread the hot dog pieces evenly over pie
~Cover evenly with the cheese
~Bake per the instructions on your dough or pre-made crust
~When the pizza is baked, brush the crust with the melted butter and sprinkle with the poppy seeds. This is the crown jewel of the Chicago Style Chili Dog Pizza.
~Top your slice with all the toppings you can find and enjoy.
