8/10 Looking Through The Glass Walls

Sandy and I watched the PETA documentary, “Glass Walls.” It is narrated by Sir Paul McCartney, long time herbivore and activist.  It is a 13 minute glimpse into factory farming, slaughterhouses, animal transport and the fishing industry. The images are savage, mind searing and unforgettable. Sir Paul’s narration is so eloquent and matter of fact. He is neither inflammatory nor emotional. It is like he is describing how to load a dishwasher and turn it on. I thought it was the perfect balance for the film’s shocking images.

Sir Paul rocked  his nobility when he made sure a copy of  “Glass Walls” was placed in every  swag bag given to the nominees and presenters at January’s Golden Globes. Much more provocative than a Rolex.

“Glass Walls” is hard to watch. The images are so brutal that Sandy shut down and emotionally struggled to believe it was real. It is like watching a slasher movie with animals as the main characters. It is hard to process the information as you are watching it.

Even as a long time veg and new vegan, I did not know just how unimaginable the treatment of animals can be.  If you have not seen what is truly happening than how can you work toward changing it? I want my words and actions to be based in as much fact as I can get my hands on and not just fueled by passion.  For 13 years, I did not want to eat animals because I didn’t want to consume anything that had suffered to become my entree. However, I never included eggs or dairy in that belief because I didn’t really grasp what was happening.

I would have never watched this documentary before the Vegan Challenge.   I realize now that I was protecting myself from the suffering and continued to believe that what I was doing was enough. And it was for me then, but now it is not. I am ready for a deeper commitment. You will know in your heart when you are ready for more. Until then, wherever you are on your journey is perfect for you right now.

Watching “Glass Walls”  felt like an internal tsunami. Every cell in my body woke up and stayed at attention.  I believe that with anything, you can either be paralyzed by the notion that it is too big for me to fix it or move to take small steps forward, bringing people along that are also willing to take small steps. I believe that if we continue to move forward together, each of us in our appropriate place on our journey, we will change the world one meal at a time.

I would love to share this documentary with you if you would like to watch it. Email me directly with your snail mail address and I will send it to you.
