Soy coffee creamer-Loved it!

The first in a long line of dairy replacements is our soy coffee creamer. I am a Splenda and fat free cream coffee drinking gal. I am incredibly quiet and can lean toward unpleasant until I have had two cups. That being said, this was a colossal test of great consequence in our house.

I purchased two kinds: Silk brand soy creamer and Trader Joe’s brand soy creamer. I thought they  both were tasty and  reasonably priced. They are both slightly sweet, but not in that metallic type of way that non-dairy creamers can sometimes be.  Sandy preferred the Silk brand. She felt it was more dense and well, silkier in texture. I would purchase either of them again.

Confirmation:

This morning after I sipped my coffee I looked at Sandy as if she had just tried to slip me cyanide. “What’s in this coffee?” I asked with a slight scowl. “Milk,”  she replied without inflection of any kind. “We are out of soy creamer but  still had milk, so I used the milk.”  Because we are still in the hybrid phase of the VE (vegan experience) and finishing the dairy left in the house,  I could hardly say anything. (Not to mention the night before we went to dollar scoop night at Baskin Robbins and I had a farewell double scoop waffle cone.) The cool thing here is that I had already become accustomed to soy creamer! One of the few things I assumed my taste buds would not let go of without a fight came naturally without me even noticing.

I can do this. We can all do this! Imagine if we were all willing to change just one micro thing in our daily routine, what an enormous impact that would make in our bodies and our world.  I’m in.

In the know:

In an effort to learn, soak up and share as much relevant information as I can, I wanted to share something I just read. I want us all to have the necessary info to make informed decisions. I don’t know yet who is right or wrong, so we can just continue to learn and share.

In the April issue of VegNews (new fave magazine for all things cool and vegan) there is a letter to the editor from a woman in Berkley, Ca. She is very disappointed  because VegNews named Silk brand  soy milk  in the Veggie Awards.  She says that Silk is owned by Dean Foods, one of the largest dairy producers in the country. Evidently, Dean Foods also owns Land O’ Lakes butter, subject of a PETA undercover investigation documenting  horrifying animal cruelty. Disappointed in Ca.  goes on to say, “Many compassionate people don’t know that buying the once-independent Silk is now supporting the worst abuses of the dairy industry.”

This quote is particularly poignant to me  because  we are  all trying to do more, waste less and be good stewards of our resources. I really do believe that we affect change when tons of people make small modifications that lead to great things.

If you know more about this topic than we look forward to hearing from you. In the meantime, I will do more research and share what I have found.

Have a great night!
